Re: Climate Change Education: One Tonne CO2 Sculpture
2011-03-15 18:15:18 UTC
For recent research on carbon reduction at a community scale see:
Energy Policy http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/03014215
Volume 38, Issue 12, December 2010, Pages 7541-7633 Special Section: Carbon Reduction at Community Scale
The editorial points out that no single intervention can deliver the level of systemic change required; and that small scale and bottom up interventions can make both direct and indirect contributions including social and technical innovation, new marketplaces and new political opportunities. The authors (Mulguletta, Jackson & van der Horst) reiterate Ostrom's 2009 argument that "many of those who need to change...have not yet accepted the reality of the threat and their need to act locally in a different manner".
I like the sculpture idea. Here in New Zealand one local government, wishing to convey the extent of soil washed away in a major flood, made a light, wooden, one metre cube, painted it brown and took it out to the public. It worked a treat.

Re: Messaging for Composting on University Campus
2011-02-22 17:57:19 UTC
We found that a simple message works best (see photo attached). Every kitchen has a bucket and compostable liner (http://www.biobag.ca/pr_household.html) emptied daily to a wheelie bin that is emptied weekly (http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/rubbrecyc/kaitocompost.html) by City Council contrators. Note: kai is the Maori term for food.

When I first got into composting in a big way I found the Rodale Book of Composting especially helpful. http://www.compost-bin.org/the-rodale-book-of-composting/

Re: CBD stormwater and native fish

CBD stands for central business district. This is an area of high rise buildings comprising offices, bars, restaurants, retail and apartments. Permeable surfaces such as lawn are few and far between.
Does anyone else out there have fish in their stormwater systems?

CBD stormwater and native fish
2010-09-26 16:29:53 UTC
greetings,
Wellington, New Zealand has a compact CBD situated between a harbour and a green belt. Native freshwater fish (Galaxiidae) migrate through the stormwater system between the harbour and the streams in the green belt in order to complete their life cycle. Five issues affect the health of the fish in the pipes: people urinate and vomit on the footpath and this goes into the stormwater system, shop owners wash their shop frontages (due to urine & vomit) with hot water and detergent that goes into the storm water system, Police confiscate liquor being drunk illegally on the streets & pour it into the stormwater system and thousands of cigarette butts also go down the drain. We would like to instigate an education programme to inform all of the stakeholders without unduly alienating key people.
Any suggestions on how to approach this?

You could try this Victoria University student group called Gecko http://union.vuw.ac.nz/union/students-clubs/gecko they take up environmental issues both on and off campus.

Hi,
It might help you to know that in New Zealand and many other countries diapers are known as nappies. Here are some links to websites and articles about composting nappies.

Re: Looking for Aboriginal, First Nations Water Quality Programs

In New Zealand, Maori (local indigenous people) have been developing cultural freshwater quality indicators and freshwater action plans. There is quite a lot available on the web including these:
