Re: Seeking Ideas for a GHG Reduction Program
2014-03-09 16:14:25 UTC
Another thought, Lori.
You guys got quite a smack from the recent flooding in your town. What's happening with all the debris that was produced? Composted? Repaired and reused? Landfilled?
What will happen when the next climate change induced storm hits? Will you be prepared? Resilient? Forewarned, and forearmed? Or will the same thing happen again? Building close to mountain river channels? Use the high hoe to tear the structure down and truck it to the landfill?
Or is there a better way that avoids those kinds of catastrophes, avoids the GHG's emitted to build those houses, and bridges and then cart the destroyed ones away? Or ensures that the damaged materials are treated responsibly and the maximum value extracted from them?

Hi Lori, Here are some GHG reduction strategies with some numbers attached.
Best bets are probably energy conservation, especially commuting and home heating and cooling. Hot water heating as well.
There's also a lot of GHG's in 'producing and selling stuff' and 'throwing it out before it's worn out' and 'not being able to repair stuff'.

One of the oldest international organizations promoting sustainable communities is UNESCO Biosphere Reserve program.
I live in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve and am a former Executive Director of our local organization. See http://www.frontenacarchbiosphere.ca/

Re: What to do about a Chinch Bug Problem
2013-04-30 14:00:36 UTC
http://www.environmentalhealth.ca/chinch.htm
Use a strong vacuum cleaner like a Shop Vac. Vacuum the target area including a 2 foot buffer in all directions. Vacuuming gets rid of the adults, nymphs and eggs. Sound too easy to be true? The head of Wolfvilles Parks Department, David Slabotsky, reports they have found this method to be 100% effective with no further follow up of any kind.
More suggestions here (Canadian site).
I suspect the birds and other natural processes will eventually take care of the chinch bugs...mother nature's way of dealing with an insect outbreak.

Re: Most likely to backyard compost?
2012-01-05 09:22:48 UTC
Perhaps contact the Compost Council of Canada to see if they have data? Or the U.S. Composting Council in the U.S.
www.compost.org
www.compostingcouncil.org
Also perhaps give Nora Goldstein at Biocycle Magazine (Emmaus, Pennsylvania) a shout to see if they have any data/articles on the subject. www.jgpress.com
Also Cornell University...Jean Bonhotal...http://cwmi.css.cornell.edu/Bonhotal.htm or Cathy Schwartz may have some suggestions. They're both great to deal with.

Re: Fertilizer Reduction & Vegetative Shoreline Buffers
2011-11-14 09:09:02 UTC
Hi Elizabeth,
Ontario has done quite a bit of work in this area. Perhaps contact the Centre for Sustainable Watersheds, in Portland, Ontario. http://www.watersheds.ca/
Also the Charleston Lake Association at: http://www.charlestonlakeassociation.ca/environment.html
And the Gananoque (gan-ann-knock-quay) River Waterway Association at: http://www.grwa.ca/
The approach taken has been to work with the 'waterway association' (landowners) to work with them on shoreline and lake assessments, then to provide information and data on 'state of the waterway' and then proceed to 'how can we improve this' and 'what environmental, economic, and social benefits will accrue through our efforts.
High profile respected leadership very helpful.

Re: Affordable Housing Tenant Behavior

iecodesign.com in Madison, WI installs multi-area energy monitoring equipment with results displayed and accessible via the web. They can install display equipment also in public areas.
Perhaps a contest for individual unit monitoring-results for those interested in participating. and even perhaps with energy rebates or prizes for reduction?
