Hello,
I am interested to know what is available in terms of research on the factors that influence people's decision to dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) properly at HHW collection events. Have folks done focus group or phone survey research on this topic in their locales or know of others who have? I am aware of surveys that have been conducted in King County, Washington that have addressed this topic. Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
Regards,
Jan

You asked about who had done research on HHW issues and behavior. I recommend you put this question also to the HHW list serve. You can find it at: http://www.p2rx.org/Networking/Listserves.cfm
Good luck

You might want to check out the HHW Collection Program Performance Auditing Presentation from the CIWMB's 2004 Used Oil/HHW Conference. The report is by Tim Grogan of County of Orange, as well as David Nightingale from Special Waste Associates. If you go to David's website: http://www.specialwasteassoc.com/ You can order the complete 90 page report, and I am fairly certain there are some surveys that may help you identify some of the barriers. The presentation is at: http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/HHW/Events/AnnualConf/2004/Presentation/GroganNi ghtingale.pdf I think you will find that the major barrier to increased participation rates at HHW or Used Oil Collection events is simply Convenience. Having events strategically located throughout the community will give all community members an equal opportunity to properly dispose of HHW.
