I am looking for suggestions to improve our eco-star award program in schools participating in our energy conservation program. We ask that students, teachers or the custodian nominate someone in their school for their effort to conserve energy or help to care for the environment. All nominees receive a certificate of recognition and winners also get a glass trophy. Interest has been marginal and I am wondering if we should ask the principals to nominate candidates.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Claudia,
perhaps the prize needs to be more interesting? Kids love movie tickets as a prize. For adults try lightbulbs or anything practical and useful.

Claudia,
One way to recognize and publicize award winners would be to create a short video on the project/achievement. This could be a student driven project or one coordinated by the organization using students (a real key for campuses). The video could be shown via the school's Web site as well as on the organization's site. A real bonus for this type of "broadcast" recognition is that it would serve to communicate information about successful projects to other schools -- models for others to use and be inspired by. It would be a way to get the stories out worldwide.
