We provide home energy auditors involved in a large-scale program targeting low income households with a watt-meter called a 'Power-Mate' (http://www.power-mate.com.au/index.html). Individual electric appliances can be 'plugged-in' through the PowerMate, which gives a digital read-out of the - power draw (watts) - energy consumption (accumulated kWh or estimated kWh per hour/quarter/year) - cost (accumulated $ or estimated $ per hour/quarter/year) - based on the tariff you set the meter at. - greenhouse gas emissions (accumulated kg CO2 or estimated kg CO2 per hour/quarter/year) - based on the greenhouse coefficient for electricity you set the meter at. Auditors find the PowerMates useful for demonstrating the running cost of electric appliances - particularly heaters, small air-conditioners, appliances in 'standby' mode and fridges/freezers.
