Greening DoD is a new project headed by EPA Region 9 Waste Management Division to encourage and promote sustainability measures in the Department of Defense (DoD). The U.S. Department of Defense is one of the nations top consumers of natural resources, energy and fuels. In 2002, DoD consumed 1.8% of all U.S. transportation fuels, and in 2004 spent a total of 5 billion dollars on construction, and 74 billion dollars on procurement. The Region 9 Waste Managment Division will collaborate and coordinate with Region 9 CED, Water, Air and Superfund Divisions to promote sustainability practices and partnerships at DoD bases and facilities. Areas of focus could include but are not limited to: -green power -energy efficiency -alternative fuels, organics -construction debris recycling -green building -beneficial use of industrial byproducts -environmentally preferred purchasing, electronics -reduction of priority chemicals. Does anyone have experience working with the Department of Defense, eg. sustainability efforts greening DoD? What efforts to green the DoD are currently in place, what stage are they at, and what type of projects are there? If anyone has any information/contacts about greening the Department of Defense, please reply to this post.
Thanks.

The military has been incorporating green building principles into their projects for the past few years. I have worked on several SPiRiT (the Army's version of LEED)rated projects for the Corps of Engineers. I found a couple links that specify their goals: List of efforts by agency: http://www.ofee.gov/sb/appendix_a.pdf#search=%22Military%20LEED%20goals%22 USGBC summary of LEED initiatives in governments and schools https://www.usgbc.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=691 Army transitioning to LEED with FY08 goals: http://www.sustainability.army.mil/tools/docs_leeds/SPIRIT_to_LEED_Memo_Jan_ 06.pdf

I am a regular reader of the Rocky Mountain Institute's books and articles. They publish a free quarterly newsletter (see http://www.rmi.org/sitepages/pid97.php) which regularly features the results of their partnerships with, and work relevant to, various industry, non-profit and government agency partners, including the DoD. The most recent issue has this article of note: "Embedding RMI Recommendations in the Military". BTW, their website is keyword searchable; for example, a search for "department of defense" came up with 23 different mentions of varying relevance: http://www.rmi.org/sitepages/pid523.php
