During the past few years a number of municipalities in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada have significantly increased the volume of recyclables and organics diverted from landfill, by switching to clear bags for garbage collection. Learn what they did, how they overcame citizen concerns about privacy, fairness and increased costs, and what they achieved.

Prince Edward Island, Canada banned all solid-coloured bags as of 2002. A mandatory source-separation program was introduced and all rural dump locations closed. We now have one landfill location, and are proud of our diversion rates of 64-65% annually since 2002. We are a small province and have proven that when businesses, homeowners, and tourists work together to do their part for the environment, wonderful results can be achieved. Wastes placed for collection in anything but clear transparent bags are simply NOT COLLECTED. Organics are collected in paper bags only, and recyclables in blue transparent bags.
