Dear Colleagues
I am taking a Master Composter training program at our local Cornell Cooperative Extension office. Two of my class mates and myself are developing an out-of-class project that is a requirement for the program. Our topic is the relationship between composting programs and other sustainability efforts; i.e., using composting as a "window" to other social/economic/sustainability educational efforts. Do any of you know of existing programs that incorporate composting into other sustainability efforts, especially centering on education of the public around sustainability efforts? Any governmental or academic studies that have been undertaken? We are aware that recycling programs are often a "link" to some people becoming interested in broader sustainability efforts.
Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to provide to us.

Hello Tom,
I encourage you to check out Clean Calgary Association's Waste Wise program. A pilot community composting workshop that worked with 100 households in the Calgary community of Dalhousie. The "hold your hand" composting program's goal was to support families and households to reduce their waste through composting while encouraging neighbourhood connections to ensure the longevity of the commitment. The program has spilt over into interests in other sustainable actions as well as a school wide composting program established at the community school. See www.cleancalgary.org for more information and contacts.
Cheers,
Kate

HI Tom,
There is a lovely retreat center in Westfield, MA that composts and all of the outside groups that use the center for meetings, retreats, etc are nicely exposed to composting (the on -site cafeteria explains it well) and lots of food is grown in the gardens at the center. www.genesiscenter.us is the website and you can speak to one of the administrators there for more information.

All,
Check out StopWaste.org - they have a comprehensive program on home composting, curbside collection of food scraps and food soiled paper, and Bay Friendly Gardening/Landscaping that brings it all together with public outreach etc.
