Does any have an answer:
Phantom Electric Loss: All of those plugged in devices that are still on while the house or business is vacant. Is there an interrupter device ( small ) between the plug and the wall outlet ( choice of devices effected ) available? When you leave the home or office you simply click a remote and the device shuts off power. When you return or open your business click the remote and units now have electricity.
Thank You,
Dick

Here is a link for information on "smart" power strips that control phantom energy use: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/12/smart_power_str.php
There are a number of remote control devices that plug into the power point that can help reduce your power consumption. These can operate via radio signals (similar to some TV style remotes), hardwired building control systems or over existing power cables (X-10). Do a search on home automation and you are likely to find the device to suit.

Hi Dick and Betsy,
Two options available to you are: 1. Switch all appliances off at the power point when they are not in use(except for items such as fridge, freezer, emergency exit lighting/signs and other critical items such as the business fax). 2. Install a timer at the switchboard to switch off power to all power points after when the building or office is unoccupied. Again power points serving critical items would be excluded. We have adopted the second option at Sustainability Victoria and it has resulted in a significant reduction in our off-peak electricity consumption. Most electricians will be able to install one for you.
Good luck with your project.

There is a product called a "Plug Miser" that uses a motion detector to turn off devices after a user set period of time.

I don't know of such items, but as a fall back you could plug all of your home entertainment and computer components into a power strip. Then flip the switch off when it's not in use. You might search on http://www.builditsolar.com/ which despite the solar in its title links to many many different kinds of energy conservation sites and documents, including a section on biofuels which may help you with your biodiesel plans.
One example is the KlikOn KlikOff http://e-lectrician.com.au/KlikOnKlikOff.php http://www.eurotec.co.nz/electrical.shtml#electrical
