My name is Kathleen Manstrom and I am a junior at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. I am a psychology major with a concentration (minor) in environmental studies. In order to graduate from Kalamazoo College every student must write a senior individualized project, which is much like a thesis. I am interested in writing my project about fostering sustainable behavior. Most senior individualized projects start out with a relevant internship the summer before they are written. I was wondering if anyone knows of any programs or individuals seeking help this summer with a project or experiment dealing with these types of issues. I am willing to travel! Thanks for your time!

Hi Kathleen. My name is Ryan Champlin and I am a graduating Master's student at the University of Utah. My program of study is called Family Ecology, which doesn't much describe what I have been researching in the past 2 years. I have been studying both cbsm and public participation in urban planning, which has led me to seek out the intersections between the two. Specifically, I think there is enough research on public participation and on environmental social marketing to suggest that involving the target population in the barriers and benefits research and the planning and implementation of the strategies can be considered another social marketing strategy.
Anyway, I am considering starting a nonprofit organization in the Salt Lake area that would use environmental social marketing strategies to foster sustainable behaviors among local businesses, governments, and residents. Unfortunately, I can't do it alone, and I need someone else that is knowledgeable and interested in cbsm and sustainability. I am sure that helping to start a nonprofit isn't exactly what you have in mind, and you could probably make some money with some other organization, but imagine the senior paper you could write with this experience!
Please think about it, and contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
Ryan Champlin

Job Announcement
Program Coordinator for the Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge
As one of the initial projects stemming from the Baltimore Sustainability Plan, the Baltimore Office of Sustainability, in partnership with the Baltimore Community Foundation, is launching the Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge (BNEC) to motivate households to reduce their energy use. In its initial phase, BNEC will be a 9-month pilot program in 6-8 Baltimore communities designed to raise awareness, reduce residential energy use, stimulate demand for energy conservation services, and learn lessons on how to motivate behavior change related to reducing residential energy use. After the pilot, we hope to use what we learn to expand BNEC citywide and connect the program to other efforts aimed at creating jobs to make Baltimore homes healthy and energy efficient. BNEC has the potential to be a national model of community mobilization, social marketing, and verifiable energy use and greenhouse gas emissions reductions
The BNEC Coordinator will be responsible for pulling together all project components needed to successfully launch and grow this national model program. Working in collaboration with the Baltimore Office of Sustainability, the Baltimore Community Foundation, and a steering committee comprised of key partner organizations, the Coordinator will be the primary point of contact and organizing force behind BNEC.
