We are in the process of instituting a one day yard waste collection in my municipality. We have come across an interesting problem, and I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of a product that may work.
Our yard waste program will use kraft bags for collection of yard waste. We would like residents to be able to place not only leaves, grass clippings, and smaller items, but also their smaller branches. The problem we've encountered is that our collector won't take them unless they're bundled, and our landfill won't accept twine with yard waste (for obvious reasons).
Does anyone know of a compost-friendly strap residents could use for branches? Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, did you find a creative way to overcome it?

Would sisal twine work? It's natural and biodegradable.

Sounds like you need to get more specifics from your vendor about what the actual problem is they are encountering with twine. You say it is obvious, but it is not and the CBSM response must be based on the real problem you trying to solve. As Karen says above there are natural fiber twines including cotton, sisal and hemp. If you look as some of the tensile strength ratings of sisal or hemp, you will be surprised that they can exceed polypropylene rope strength depending their thickness.
