One year ago, the U.S. White House Office of Science and Technology Policy assembled a Social and Behavioral Sciences Team (SBST)a cross-agency group of experts in applied behavioral science to translate findings and methods from the social and behavioral sciences into improvements in Federal policies and programs. The Team was charged with measuring the impact of these applications on key policy outcomes using rigorous evaluations. This month, the SBST released its first Annual Report.

In the report is a summary of one initiative to boost double-sided printing. SBST and the USDAs Economic Research Service (ERS) created a dialog box that asked employees to change their default printer setting to double-sided after employees had initiated a single-sided print job. Only those printing one-sided copies got the prompt, and getting the prompt meant having to click an extra time. This prompt and disincentive increased the likelihood of double-sided printing by 5.8 percentage points, from a baseline of 46 percent. Based on this finding, ERS plans to change the default setting of all printers to double-sided.
