Community Concern for Pollution: Social and Environmental Influences

Cutter, S. C. (1981). Community concern for pollution: Social and environmental influences. Environment and Behavior, 13, 1, 105-124.
Determined how community attitudes toward pollution varied among social groups and with levels of pollution. Results from 22 communities in the Chicago area are contrary to the literature. It is suggested that concern about pollution is not only a characteristic of the suburban White middle class. High levels of concern were found among other segments of the populace--the minorities and the poor. It is concluded that actual measured levels of pollution do influence concern levels, but both social and environmental measures are necessary to predict community concern. (30 ref)
