de-Jager, H. & Van-der-Loo, F. (1990). Decision making in environmental education: Notes from research in the Dutch NME-VO Project. Journal of Environmental Education, 22, 1, 33-43.
Decision making is often mentioned as an important feature of teaching science in technological and social context. In the Dutch project on environmental education (NME-VO), science-teaching materials have been developed within an environmental context. Decision making on environmental issues is a characteristic of the teaching units. Research was done on 200 13-14 yr old students' preconceptions and beliefs and on the learning effects afterward in relation to the environmental issues on which the units focus. This paper outlines some results of the research on the units on meat and fuel. Results are discussed from the perspective of decision making as it relates to students' views of the problem, alternative solutions and their consequences, and students' intended behavior.
