Distinguishing Potential Recyclers from Nonrecyclers: A Basis for Developing Recycling Strategies

Lansana, F. M. (1992). Distinguishing potential recyclers from nonrecyclers: A basis for developing recycling strategies. Journal of Environmental Education, 23, 2, 16-23.

Examined the underlying dimensions of household recycling behavior. Four sets of variables were used to classify recyclers and nonrecyclers: the demographic attributes of the residents, their knowledge of the recycling program, their perception of program policies and problems, and their attitudes toward the environment. Discriminant analysis was performed using data from 2 communities (463 residents). Results show that recyclers, compared to nonrecyclers, were more likely to be homeowners, aged 40-64 yrs, be aware of the recycling program, prefer mandatory recycling, and perceive a greater need for recycling.
