Predictors of Responsible Behavior in Members of Three Wisconsin Conservation Organizations

Sivek, D. J., & Hungerford, H. (1990). Predictors of responsible behavior in members of three Wisconsin conservation organizations. Journal of Environmental Education, 21, 2, 35-40.

Surveyed 281 members of consumptive resource use groups (CRUGs) to assess the most parsimonious sets of 8 selected variables that best predicted responsible environmental behavior (REB). The extent to which these variables differed from the most parsimonious set of predictors of REB in members of an appreciative resource use group (ARUG) was determined, using results obtained by A. P. Sia et al (see PA, Vol 74:17430). For each of 3 CRUGs, the following sets of variables best predicted REB: (1) perceived skill in using environmental action strategies (skill) and level of environmental sensitivity (LES); (2) skill and individual locus of control; and (3) skill, LES, and group locus of control. For the ARUG, the most parsimonious set of variables was skill and LES.
