Political Culture, Postmaterial Values, and the New Environmental Paradigm: A Comparative Analysis of Canada and the United States

Steger, M. A., Pierce, J. C., Steel, B. S., & Lovrich, N. P. (1989). Political culture, postmaterial values, and the new environmental paradigm: A comparative analysis of Canada and the United States. Political Behavior, 11, 3, 233-254.

Investigates the relationship between postmaterial values (e.g., giving people more say in government decisions and protecting freedom of speech) and the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) in Canada and the US. The survey covered 600 Ontario and 476 Michigan citizens and 554 Ontario and 684 Michigan environmental activists. Rather than reflecting a single larger dimension of value orientation, the postmaterialist value measure of R. Inglehart (1977) and the NEP Index of R. E. Dunlap and K. Van Liere (1978, 1984) were separate constructs in the thinking of the Canadians and Americans surveyed.
