Environmental Attitude Survey of University Students: 1971 vs. 1981

Thompson, J. C., & Gasteiger, E. L. (1985). Environmental attitude survey of university students: 1971 vs. 1981. Journal of Environmental Education, 17, 1, 13-22.

Conducted an attitudinal survey that contrasted university student perceptions on environmental/energy questions in 1971 and 1981 (3,414 and 3,867 students, respectively). The survey was designed to measure changes in attitude toward 35 specific items in 5 major categories (i.e., food-stuffs, household items, transportation, personal items, and recreation). Significant differences were observed between the 2 surveys with most of the differences associated with political leanings, income, gender, and geographical background. The changes were in the direction of a more materialistic lifestyle with less consideration for environmental/energy issues and concerns.
