Energy Demand Behavior in a Master-Metered Apartment Complex: An Experimental Analysis

Walker, J. M. (1979). Energy demand behavior in a master-metered apartment complex: An experimental analysis. Journal of Applied Psychology, 64, 2, 190-196.

In a master-metered apartment complex, electricity use is metered at a single point for all tenants so that tenants do not pay energy bills based on their individual use. An experiment was conducted in a 176-unit master-metered apartment complex to examine an alternative method for making tenants liable for their own energy use. A similar complex served as a control. Results support a hypothesis of significant reduction in electricity use by the experimental complex whose tenants were paid cash awards for meeting a specified energy conservation checklist.
