In a master-metered apartment complex, electricity use is metered at a single point for all tenants so that tenants do not pay energy bills based on their individual use. An experiment was conducted in a 176-unit master-metered apartment complex to examine an alternative method for making tenants liable for their own energy use. A similar complex served as a control. Results support a hypothesis of significant reduction in electricity use by the experimental complex whose tenants were paid cash awards for meeting a specified energy conservation checklist.
