Values and their Effect on Pro-Environmental Behavior

Karp, D. G. (1996). Values and their effect on pro-environmental behavior. Environment and Behavior, 28, 1, 111-133.

Used the 56 item Schwartz Scale of Values (S. H. Schwartz, 1992) to examine the structure of values and to assess the effect of these values on environmental behavior. The 2-dimensional construct was administered to 302 undergraduates. Values found to have a positive influence on environmental behavior were Self-Transcendence/Openness to Change and Universalism/Biospheric. Values found to have a negative influence included Self-Enhancement/Conservation. The values measured did have significant effects on individual contributions to a collective good, that is, pro-environmental behavior.
