Values as Predictors of Environmental Attitudes: Evidence for Consistency Across 14 Countries

Schultz, P. W. & Zelezny, L. (1999). Values as predictors of environmental attitudes: Evidence for consistency across 14 countries. Journal of Environmental Psychology, 19, 3, 255-265.

Presents the results from a multinational study of the relationship between values and environmental attitudes. Data were obtained from 2,160 college students in 14 countries in Europe and Latin America and in the United States. Ss completed a questionnaire that measured environmental attitudes, values, self-reported pro-environmental behaviors, and demographics. Results indicate support for the distinction between different types of environmental attitudes. Regression analyses revealed a consistent pattern of findings across countries. These findings support the value-basis theory of environmental attitudes.
