The environmental action internal control index
Smith-Sebasto, N. J. & Fortner, R. W. (1994). The environmental action internal control index. Journal of Environmental Education, 25, 4, 23-29.
Developed the Environmental Action Internal Control Index (EAICI) to assess the relationship between locus of control of reinforcement and environmentally responsible behavior. 853 undergraduate students (aged 17-44) completed the EAICI along with a series of other tests that measured locus of control (LOC) and environmental behaviors, knowledge, and skills. Environmental action LOC was found to be related to both self-reporting of environmentally responsible behavior and perceived knowledge of and skill in using environmental action strategies. Using the measures of behavior, knowledge, and skill, the EAICI identified 82% of the Ss according to the extent of their environmentally responsible behaviors, and a positive correlation between EAICI and 2 of the 3 LOC tests provided evidence of convergent validity in the EAICI.
