Green Issues: Dimensions of Environmental Concern

Zimmer, M. R., Stafford, T. F. & Stafford, M. R. (1994). Green issues: Dimensions of environmental concern. Journal of Business Research, 30, 1, 63-74.

Identified specific environmental issues that are important to consumers to define the domain of the construct of environmental issues and to examine how issues involved in environmental concern will influence the way the consumer market is segmented. Survey results from 33 environmentally oriented organizations were used to create a list of 57 distinct environmental concerns. An instrument was designed to measure consumers' perceptions of the importance of these 57 items and was administered to 118 undergraduates. Through their responses, the list was refined into 7 dimensions: concern for waste, wildlife, biosphere, popular issues, health, energy awareness, and environmental technology. Findings suggest that environmental concern is an umbrella concept that, in terms of specific issues championed, is multifaceted.
