Hausbeck, K. W. & Milbrath, L. W. & Enright, S. M. (1992). Environmental knowledge, awareness and concern among 11th-grade students: New York State. Journal of Environmental Education, 24, 1, 27-34.

Evaluated the quality of environmental education (EE) among 3,207 11th graders in 30 secondary schools in New York State. Independent variables included type of school, region of school, and sex of students. Although Ss scored low on knowledge questions, they displayed higher scores on awareness and concern, and 56% of the Ss reported they would like additional EE to be offered. Variation was found between and within schools with regard to environmental learning. Private school Ss had more EE knowledge than public school Ss had. City public school Ss had a very low knowledge level. Policies for improving EE at the secondary school level within New York State and the US are discussed.
