The Canadian Medical Association Journal has published an article about CFL bulbs and mercury. It's in response to recent worries from consumers regarding the health effects of CFL bulbs. It's an interesting read, and addresses what to do if the bulb breaks along with other health myths about CFL bulbs:
When compact fluorescent bulbs became widely available in the mid- 1980s, several studies were published suggesting there was an elevated melanoma risk, but those have since been discredited, Veitch adds. "With respect to cancer risk, there is no good evidence that anyone need fear from the use of compact fluorescents or regular fluorescent tubes. There's no risk for melanoma from either of those lamp types." http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/reprint/177/2/136-a?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULT FORMAT=&fulltext=mercury&andorexactfulltext=and&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&sort spec=date&resourcetype=HWCIT
