We ordered a new chair for our home office. When it arrived, it had a big yellow slip inside, informing us of the service center to call if there were any parts missing. Sure enough, there was a caster missing. So we called the service center and requested one missing caster. Today, we received in the mail a plastic wrapped package containing five (yes, 5) casters - the original caster package that should have been with our original shipment. To me this is a sign not only of wasteful production and design, but also of the consequences of poor design and engineering on the environment. For one thing, if production were done well and shrinkage was not a known factor on the factory floor, the yellow sheet notifying where to call for missing parts could be dispensed with. For another, what should we now do with 4 extra casters? Send them back to the production facility? Dispose of them in the trash? Keep them in storage here at home? Regardless of the solution, the result is waste.
