Power Companies and Solar Energy

Both Austin Power and Duke Energy have planes to install wind turbines and solar power panels respectively, keep them operational for you, and give you I think credit for the electricity your system generates or at least some credit. No doubt they are trying to keep customers from going off line which quite a few were doing with wind turbines. What are the pros and cons of self supplied wind and solar as opposed to these power company approaches.
