A literature review was conducted to identify behavior change tools that might be effective in eliciting energy efficient driving styles. Then, a questionnaire was sent to postal workers in the Netherlands to uncover types of driving behavior and barriers to using energy saving styles of driving. A pilot program was then developed to eliminate the barriers. First, information was provided in the pamphlets and films describing how an energy efficient driving style could be provided. Then, weekly feedback on gasoline consumption by the mail vans was posted on a bulletin board. The amount of energy savings was measured prior to the intervention, after one month and again after six months. In addition, these energy savings were compared to a control group that received no information or feedback.

The intervention combining information and feedback elicited 7.3% energy savings compared to the control condition. Moreover, six months later, 5.5% savings was measured.
