My group is fighting a planned Interstate Connector Road Project that will carve a road throught the Daniel Boone National Forest in Eastern Kentucky, spliting the 8100 acre affected area in half. This project, presented to our community as a 'done-deal', without a 'No-Build' option, was railroaded past us with virtually no local citizens input (except by those who stand to make a great deal of money if the road goes through), and in violation of federal law, no input whatsoever on a national level. We believe this road, whose stated purpose in the alleviate traffic congestion (which doesn't exist) will not only destroy valuable wilderness habitat and recreational public land, but will contribute to the further deterioration of our historic downtown district and increase the Walmart-'sprawl' in our county where no zoning laws or long-term planning strategy even exists.Having reviewed the Justification and Scoping Studies for this project - and from a long-term planning 'smart-growth prospective - this project makes no sense either from an economic, engineering, social, or a conservation standpoint. The real estate barons who have controlled the economic life of this community for more than 50 years have decided this National Forest should be at their disposal, to do with as they please. As a result of their choke-hold on the local economy, local apathy is at an all-time high. Folks say, "They always get what they want anyway, so why fight it."We are fighting this project on many levels right now - national (Federal Highway Admin., Trans. Dept., USF&WS), the state level, and trying hard to engage the local citizens. We have been reaching out in as many national organizations as we can, stressing legal and social issues. The bottom line is that we are seriously out-numbered and need as much assistance in stopping this road as we can get.
