In order to combat obesity and diet among persons living in an area with a high rate of premature death, the REACH project proposes turning vacant community lots into community vegetable gardens. Not only will the lots no longer be an eyesore but will be productive by giving residents an opporrtunity to 1) assist in the planting and maintenance of the gardens and 2) increasing their consumption of healthy vegetables and fruits. The new behaviors are sustainable because the residents will have an active role in their development and consumption of the products.
