I am a Board member of the Ontario Council for Prosperity, Social Justice and Environmental Sustainability through Innovation (The Ontario Council for Innovation). It is the successor organization to the Premier's Council, an Ontario government institution that existed through the Davis, Peterson and Rae eras, but which was ended by the current Harris government. It is entirely divorced from government and, like many ngo's, is broke. But we are trying to carry on the idea of building a province/society that is at once prosperous, decent and clean and we know that these are all necessary conditions one for the other. Also, I am running for Town Council in the forthcoming municipal election. I would like to get my hands on anything that would help me distinguish my candidacy from the others. The thrust of my campaign is that Collingwood is on the cusp of something good or something bad. The large influx of new residents and weekenders has had a polarizing effect in terms of income distribution. It will not be long before that reverberates to create social difficulties of all kinds.I argue that we need new economic activity to offset the massive tourism and ski developments of Intrawest. However, this is not simply a call for more "factories on wheels" - auto parts makers who thrive on municipal tax breaks. We need new businesses that meet 3 key criteria:1. The product/service they produce has an export focus - at least outside the region but preferably to international markets.2. The product/service is idea-based, as opposed to resource-based.3. The economic activity is inherently environmentall sustainable. There are one or two such businesses in the community already and they provide good jobs with career prospects. But they are not nearly prevalent enough to balance the poorly paying jobs that are created in the service industries supporting tourism. Also, I am a Board member of the International Institute of Concern for Public Health, the organization founded by Dr. Rosalie Bertell and Dr. Ursula Franklin. It is based on the premise that a healthy environment is basic human right.
