The key issue is Global Warming.It trumps all other issues short of all-out nuclear war. For instance, the ANWR fight was a "good fight" but that "refuge" and its life will be destroyed by Global warming within the next few decades anyway.Since the National Academy of Science and others bagan sounding the alarm about the potential for "abrubt climate change" (or "climate crash") communicating and educating about this has become even more urgent.
