I am an environmental specialist who works for the U.S. Army, United States Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command,Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey 07806-5000. Part of my job is taking over part of the P2 program from someone who recently retired. In order for me to get a high performance rating I will have to come up with an idea to prevent, mitigate pollution, and lower costs. I need to bring a new program to fruition and be an eye catcher. Just doing my job isn't enough anymore. I am looking for a Pollution Prevention Program I can initiate, or improve a current program. Saving money initially might not be the focus but showing a savings in the long run is definitely important. I must preserve and protect the environment. We do have a HAZMART and its run by one of our engineers. We are almost completely ODC compliant, I just have a few minor tasks to complete. Background Information: Picatinny Arsenal has been the site of ordnance and weapons production from 1880 until the Vietnam. It is surrounded by populated areas in Morris County NJ. The arsenal area contained iron forges for production canon, shot, bar iron and other material during the American Revolution. Iron ore for the forges came from nearby iron mines active in the 18th and 19 centures. The forges continued to produce for several decades. When Picatinny was established in 1880, it was expanded to assemble powder charges for cannons and to fill projectiles. It was also expanded to assemble maximite for WWI, WWII the Korean War and Vietnam. During those period Picatinny was involved in production sof explosives, rocket and munition propellants, protechnic signals and flares, fuses and metal components. Currently the primary mission is research, developmen and engineering of muntions and weapons. Picatinny comprises about 10 miles and employs about 2,800 people. There are 3 main bodies of water going through Picatinny. Picatinny Lake, Green Pond Brook and Bear Swamp Brook. Picatinny is actively looking at privitizing much of the southern sections. We are a superfund site and we were put on the NPL list in 1990. My budget is limited. I have to show very clearly that an initial expenditure could really save the goverment money in the long run. Any assistance or recommendations would be truly appreciated.Sincerely, Jeanne
