I work for the WA State Department of Natural Resources providing environmental education outreach for the Small Forest Landowner Office. The mission of our office is to improve the economic and ecological viability of family-sized forestry businesses in the state. My opinion is that the best way to make small-scale forestry ecologically sustainable is to improve its economic viability. This will require the support of a wide consumer base. Getting consumers to buy locally and, in many situations, pay slightly more for locally produced, sustainably grown wood products will require educating consumers about the impacts of buying imported wood products from regions that do not manage their forests sustainably. I am very interested in educational outreach that changes consumer habits.
