I am currently a planning commissioner in Oregon City. We have a very unique geographic layout to our city with its numerous watersheds, steep slopes, two rivers and the beautiful Newell Creek Canyon. We are constantly struggling with development issues and the preservation and enhancement of our natural resources. I am also currently engaged as the project coordinator for the First City Cleanup and Enhancement Committee. The committee is relatively new, less than one year old, and is attempting to educate and enlist citizens in enhancement and cleanup projects throughout the community. One of the largest challenges is educating people that clean water begins in their yards and in front of their homes. What goes into the storm drains eventually ends up in our rivers and streams. Very few people even know that they live in a watershed, aside from how they affect the watershed.
