Check out the TAPP (Think About Personal Pollution) program in Tallahassee, Florida at http://www.tappwater.org/. They have a great TV ad campaign.

Promoting Recycling in Poor Neighborhoods
2009-10-12 08:28:42 UTC
I think that residents in poor neighborhoods might respond well to a campaign that shows how recycling creates jobs for them. Has anyone studied this?
thanks!

How Do We Reach the Poor?
2008-01-16 11:39:18 UTC
Hi All,
Tallahassee has a growing green program that is going to have some great results, but one of my concerns doesn't seem to have been addressed yet and I'm hoping someone else can give me some suggestions. I bought a house in what we call a "transitional neighborhood" - a nice way of saying a poor neighborhood that is slowly being upgraded as people renovate the homes. But for now, it is still the bad side of town and the issues are different than for the wealthier neighborhoods. People litter, dump garbage in the woods, don't recycle, most don't own their homes and I would say don't have that pride of ownership that would make a difference. Can anyone point me to resources for working with these very basic types of behavior change? In other words, people who don't have home computers, may not even have steady employment, can't worry about whether their car is a gas guzzler or not because what they really need is simply reliable transportation. I liken it to Maslow's "Hierarchy of Need" (Wikepedia has a pretty good definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs) but for waste management and green living: it's hard to worry about recycling your electronics when the power company is threatening to turn off your power...
Thanks for any help
- Laurie

Faith and the Environment
2007-11-30 09:24:12 UTC
I was perusing my favorite web site this morning and saw this link: http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/topic.jsp?term=Topic/faithAndEnvironme nt to archived articles about a subject that we discussed a while back. If you don't know about Environmental Health News, it's a great resource about environmental issues and research world-wide.

Fluorescent Lighting Article in Oct. Consumer Reports
2007-11-08 12:59:01 UTC
I just saw this article - it has a pretty good comparison of 5 brands of bulbs by price, claimed lumens, actual lumens, efficiency and run up time (how long it takes to get to full brightness).
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/home-garden/home-improvement/hardware-buil ding-supplies/lightbulbs/compact-fluorescent-lighting-10-07/overview/bulbs-ov ..htm
Unfortunately the table from the article is not available on line without registering, but the rest of the article is worth reading. It also has info on spill clean up.

Websites about Types of Fluorescent Lighting
2007-11-06 09:32:53 UTC
I'd like to suggest two web sites for people trying to figure out which bulb is good in which application: http://www.nvisioncfl.com/products.aspx - this is the Home Depot brand, but it is also the best web site I've found. This is not an endorsement of their products. http://www.newmoa.org/prevention/mercury/imerc/FactSheets/lighting.cfm - NEWMOA is the Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association and their web site is full of great information like this fact sheet. If anyone has found other web sites with good descriptions, I'd like to see them. What I've found is that most homeowners are just as confused as this list serve string indicates. Many also think that mercury in CFLs is a new thing - they never knew that the straight bulbs used for decades also contained mercury.

Fluorescent Lamp Info from Florida
2007-07-18 09:23:52 UTC
Florida DEP has recently posted a press release on compact fluorescent lamp usage and spill clean up. Our lab also did a modeling study to show how quickly mercury vapors can be eliminated from a room by opening the windows and using a floor fan. All of this is available at http://www.dep.state.fl.us/waste/categories/mercury/default.htm, right on the first page.

Thinking More about Using Television
2007-02-27 17:11:53 UTC
Mindy Lemoine's last post about rain barrel benches (what a COOL IDEA) and her last comment about HG TV's show "Living With Ed" prompted me to suggest another venue for getting environmental messages out - television shows. I've been excited watching Law and Order Special Victims Unit this season - on two shows they have talked about environmental issues of concern to me and my office. People are watching the show and getting educated whether they know it or not! Marketers have known this for a long time and use product placement to promote everything from soup to nuts (and cigarettes, beer, cereal - you name it!) Why not include environmental messages in the backgrounds - recycling cans, posters on office walls, blue bins in front of houses - you get my drift. Or make sure local news anchors have mugs with recycling logos. I'm sure others can come up with better ideas than these. Maggie Simpson has always been a rabid environmentalist. How does the show get it's ideas? I don't have any definitive solutions for how we can use this, but just want to bring it to your attention - this is a great list serve full of creative and innovative people, some of whom must have connections to this industry.
Thanks for listening to me
