Doug -
I would find it a great loss if I didn't get the regular emails anymore. Despite high volume, I like having them come directly to me. Having to make the extra effort to go to the website to follow the content would significantly reduce my following this very useful list. I'd hate to loose the convenience that we have now.

Re: Question about GIS and Climate change ...

I believe Anthony Leiserowitz (now at Yale) and a colleague have done something like this for culturally important sites in Alaska. Don't know specifics, but may search for Tony at the Forestry School and find out!

Re: thinking more about using television

Dear all -
In the just published book referenced below, which many members of this group may find of interest anyway, there is a chapter by Sharon Dunwoody about what can and cannot be achieved through different media channels, including TV. You may want to check it out. Dunwoody, S. (2007). The challenge of trying to make a difference using media messages. In: Moser, S.C. and L. Dilling, eds., /Creating a Climate for Change: Communicating Climate Change and Facilitating Social Change/. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, pp. 89-104. At the risk of sounding completely self-promotional, I encourage you all to get a copy of the book, or ask your libraries/institutions to acquire a copy. It's pricey - sadly - but if enough people buy the hard cover, we'll get to soft-cover in the not too distant futures. For more information go to: http://www.isse.ucar.edu/communication/book/

That is a commonly cited figure coming out of the diffusion of innovation studies -- a huge field. So I recommend you look into the "grandfather's" bible -- Everett Rogers on Diffusion. Another person I heard recently citing this is David Gershon of the Empowerment Institute in New York. If you google that institute, maybe they have some direct reference to it.

Dear Cedar -
What Lynn just wrote applies very much to other areas such as communicating scary things like climate change, in which I have done a bit of work on emotional responses and what that means in terms of communicating it. Thanks Lynn for your thoughts! If you're interested in a book chapter on the emotional aspects of communicating climate change, send me a direct email.

Public Service Annoucement on Energy/Climate - re: Reducing Household Emissions
2006-06-08 12:01:57 UTC
Hi all -
Following the various messages on reducing energy consumption in households, I want to pass on this ad that I believe - from a communications perspective - is REALLY excellent. It comes from the government (believe it or not) of Victoria, Australia -- like in the US, state governments in Australia tend to be better on energy/climate issues than the federal one. I thought it's a great visualization, has an important element of surprise and suspense, and is empowering. Spread it widely!!!

You may want to look at Bob Doppelt's book, Leading Change toward Sustainability. I think it came out a couple of years ago. Should be easy to find. The "social side" as you call it, is HUGE. Change needed at every level - individual behavior (and the mindset, values, etc. underlying it), in education, in organizations, industry, local communities, the social movement literature -- all that has something to say. In less than a year, I and a colleague of mine, Lisa Dilling will publish an anthology of original papers on communication and social change as related to climate change (but much applicable also to sustainability). It will come out from Cambridge University Press, and is entitled CREATING A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE. I'll send an announcement when available, but just as a heads up.
Best regards,

Re: Do green buildings foster sustainable behaviour?
2005-11-04 12:16:51 UTC
A number of colleges and local governments in the US that have built green buildings also make a big effort to educate the residents of these buildings about "green" elements of the buildings and other ways to "be green" - I can think of some examples in Cambridge, MA, Portland, OR, Santa Monica, CA (including some apartment complex there where renters participate in ecoteams, do a sustainability self-assessment, and make a commitment to reduce energy, water, waste, and toxics), also check out Oberlin College, University of South Carolina, Columbus, and others. I don't know whether these efforts have been written up in all cases, but you could probably search city and college websites and look for such information. I guess the point is that those who build green, are often so convinced of what they're doing that they add an educational component that may at least raise the likelihood that folks living there begin adopting some more green behaviors
