The Friends of Pleasant Bay, Inc. is a cummunity based organization dedicated to the preservation of the water quality of Pleasant Bay and the diversity of its wildlife habitats. In 1985 the Friends lobbied the state of Massachusetts to declare the bay as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern which was granted in 1987. Four towns on Cape Cod, Chatham, Harwich, Brewster and Orleans, have portions of their land mass in the Pleasant Bay watershed. The Friends of Pleasant Bay are concerned with land use in the watershed, the regulation of docks and piers, public access to the bay and foster recreational programs for public use of the bay. We also foster academic ecological and marine geology research conducted in the bay, as well as, give grants to the local schools to implement curricula which include learning about the bay and its varied ecological habitats.
