Hello Anastasia:
See: http://www.cbsm.com/cases/water+efficiency+durham_165
The link to the reports is broken, but I am sure that the coordinator, Glenn Pleasance, would send to you.
Good luck

Re: Conducting Surveys on Stream Restoration

You both raise some interesting points that may influence the approach that we take for a project that I am working on related to shoreline restoration (Lake Ontario so not riparian). Part of this initiative includes an evaluation of ecological goods and services, and for this we need to gain a better understanding of how and by whom the shoreline is being used. I am now wondering if we need to establish their understanding and/or appreciation for what constitutes shoreline health. Anyway, this does not really answer your question, Karen, but perhaps others can. Good luck! Kate

Found the UK example of rehabilitated quarry focused on extreme sports: http://www.adrenalinquarry.co.uk/
Other examples of more innovative after uses of pits/quarries are outlined here, with some focused on recreational uses: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@aggregates/documents/document/stdprod_067739.pdf (see Chap 10)

Re: Keeping ATV users from Driving over Salmon Habitat

Hi Megan:
I have long wanted to see a coordinated campaign aimed at ATV users - this is a well known threat to species at risk/biodiversity in many parts of Canada. I would think that a logical step would be to try to engage some of the existing associations (e.g. http://atvontario.com/aboutus.php ; http://www.atvbc.ca/, etc). Not sure if there is a national one. Nothing beats working through existing networks and building on that existing trust. I would also think that providing some alternatives will be key, so not just about keeping them out but giving some options. There is often concern (liability) about this but I would love to see some of the exhausted aggregate pits include this as an afteruse - there are some good examples of this type of 'extreme' stuff in the UK (can't find the website but something like extreme sports/adventures)
Good luck

Hello Tiffany:
You might want to look at Credit Valley Conservation's Conservation Youth Corps program - http://www.creditvalleyca.ca/cyc/. This program has been quite successful in terms of engaging youth in environmental restoration initiatives.
If you need any detail, I would be pleased to put you in touch with the coordinators.
Good luck,
Kate

Kristen:
One other thing that I forgot to mention - I seem to recall reading something several years ago about a young man who was convicted of 'turtle popping' in Ontario. The punishment included many hours of volunteer work to speak at schools about the effects that this has on turtle populations, etc. I believe that it was very effective for many reasons, including changing this individual's perspective, but cannot remember the details. Others may remember..

The massasauga recovery team has undertaken a significant amount of work in this area and would likely be a good source of information for various programs: http://www.massasauga.ca/
Also consider contacting Dave Ireland at OREG: http://www.torontozoo.com/conservation/RoadEcologyGroup.asp?
Finally Scisentional Sssnakes has a great outreach program: http://www.scisnake.com/
You are likely already familiar with this but good summary of Paul Ashley and Jeff Robinson's 1996 study: http://www.torontozoo.com/adoptapond/pdfs/r&e_Tues5.PAshley%20etal.pdf
Paper is here: http://www.lpcip.com/download/Road%20Mortality%20on%20the%20Long%20Point%20Causeway.pdf
Good luck,

We used the following company but I should note that I hired an artist to develop both designs (actually two separate artists - let me know if you want their contact information). Anyway, the company was FANTASTIC and provided substantial discount as an 'in-kind' donation.

I dealt with Drew Downs - [email protected] - and he was extremely helpful. Feel free to use my name.
Good luck

Hi Robert:
One other thought that I have been mulling for several years but never pursued is a series of temporary tattoos - my thought centered around species at risk but I think that it could be expanded to incorporate other messaging. In my experience, younger children anyway love tattoos and stickers.
Just a thought...

I was involved in a program several years ago aimed at increasing awareness related to American Badgers in Ontario and most importantly encouraging the public to report sightings. Amongst other initiatives(including baseball caps, posters, public service annoucement, magnets set out in mass mailing (10 000 residents in hotspot area for AMBA), we developed two types of ipod covers partly to see which was the most popular. Interestingly most ecologists did not support the anthropomorphic / cartoon versions but these were OVERWHELMINGLY the most popular with high school to undergraduate students. Attached are samples...
