Re: sustainable hardware models

Hi,
You can look up http://www.rideaulumber.com/ Home Hardware stores are a small/medium store size chain in Canada - and this outlet, in Smiths Falls, Ontario (a town under 15,000 pop) has made an effort with renewables.

Please look into the Well Aware program that blankets most of southern Ontario and some municipalities in the North as well. www.wellaware.ca

Re: Seeking examples or studies on CBSM and regulation

I'm not sure if this is how it happened, but a few municipalities in Canada now have vehicle idling by-laws - it may have started with CBSM with signage and other communications in specific locations (such as schools through the Green Communities (Ontario). Toronto is an example of where bylaws have been enacted - stipulating time limits on this most wasteful and polluting activity. Are people idling unnecessarily all over the world?? I just can't understand why drivers started to do this ...

Rural/Small Community CBSM
2006-06-05 12:17:13 UTC
Hi all,
I see some references to work in rural areas and am wondering about the basis for these initiatives. If you are working on cbsm strategies at the rural municipal/community level, is the population base less than 25,000 - or even less than 15,000? What might be the variety of funding sources for projects? Who Is driving the initiatives - a not-for-profit, municipal govt, other level of govt, "interested folks", association, other? Do you believe your project is a "one-off" or is there sustained interest (including multi year $$ commitment) to address a variety of local issues? Any insight would be most appreciated.

Re: Environmental Education- Sustainable water use activities

Here is a link to a really good children's water festival held each year in Eastern Ontario, Canada. All the displays are interactive. http://www.riverinstitute.ca/Festival_English/ You'd have to delve a little deeper with the organizers/station masters to know exactly how each centre is set up.
Good luck!

water saving signage

(Good natured humour for your day). I'm going way back to my teen years - I'll never forget a t-shirt I had at the time, with wording as follows: "Save Water - Shower with a Friend". Now, I'm not really sure that would work ....

self assessment tools in agriculture

Good evening all,
I don't know much about it, but in Ontario, Canada, the provincial government encourages farmers to submit their "Environmental Farm Plan". There are associated $$ incentives to complete projects that make an improvement to any impacts of their operations. eg fencing cattle out of streams; manure management

Re: Searching for a book on Sustainable Business Practices

Good evening, these references are from http://www.nrtee-trnee.ca/eng/Help/index-a-z-results_e.cfm?subject=Decision%20making - might be a bit dated, but it might be interesting to see how this issue has progressed. There are quite a few publications through the NRTEE based in Ottawa, Canada. See the website. Patricia Discussions on Decision-making Practices for Sustainable Development (1992) HTML Version - PDF Version (6.8 MB) This book explores how Canadian institutions can integrate sustainable development concerns into their everyday management decisions. It draws from the experience of decision makers from across Canada and further afield who have been introducing sustainable development concepts, objectives and principles into the management practices of many different types of organizations. Attention was given to the common elements driving decision making, the tools or devices that have proven successful in bringing about change, and the principal barriers to success. Author: NRTEE ISBN: 1-895643-05-8 Disponible en franais Sustainable Development: A Manager's Handbook (1991) PDF Version (8.93 MB) Sustainable development has changed the management paradigm. Increasingly, managers are recognizing that balancing growth and development with the need to protect the environment is an integral part of achieving success. The purpose of this handbook is to assist organizations in improving their sustainable development practices. The handbook is divided into three parts. Part A answers the question "Why should you be concerned about sustainable development?". Part B suggests how to grade an organization's performance and includes a "do it yourself" environmental audit. Part C provides suggestions as to how an organization can improve its performance and contains a series of success stories. Author: David W. Conklin, Richard C. Hodgson, and Eileen D. The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy in Canada published a Decision makers guide to Sustainable Development - not quite CBSM but might be of interest in your search. I believe it was based on case studies. They may have done more ... I'm not up to date.
