Re: Reducing Tree Vandalism
2009-01-21 19:24:14 UTC
We are about to start a revegetation programme in a remnant bushland along the river foreshore area in a very exclusive suburb of Perth. We have already been told by one homeowner bordering the foreshore not to plant trees that may obstruct his views from his home. I will be introducing myself to these homeowners and asking for their input into the placement of these trees- basically by coming into their homes and standing at their favourite viewpoint looking over the parkland, with another person standing out there with a pole, and trying to negotiate a settlement that will allow habitat rehabilitation as well as preserve views. Another plan is to get local home owners to adopt these larger trees and even place memorial plaques under them.
Check out the City of San Francisco's street tree treatments- they construct triangular wooden supports around them and wrap the topmost brace with cardboard signs printed with quotes (Martin Luther King and others) and poetry about trees. It's poignant and makes friendly what is basically a gaurding system.
hope this helps.

thanks- this looks great and I love that the case study section has more detail rather than just the reference. This new format will definatly encourage me to make more active use of the site.

ICLEI Water Campaign Community Quantifiables
2009-01-15 17:53:27 UTC
Hello there,
We have reached Milestone 4 in the Water Campaign and I am looking for ideas from other local governments as to what they did to demonstrate quantifiable change within their communities as a result of Water Campaign actions.
Any insight would be appreciated.
thanks,
