Greening Commutes -- what's been tried, what works, what doesn't
2012-06-12 14:46:49 UTC
Our campus Green Team is focusing our annual campaign on greening commutes. Do you have any success stories/experiences to share? Feel free to look at our past two campaigns:

Re: Energy Reduction in Offices

Case studies are hard to come by, but we are working on this at our institution too. Today I came across this:

The whole cool biz initiative in Japan is interesting as well. Here is our site: http://www.bcit.ca/heatsavers/

Check out bcit.ca/sustainability, particularly the great waste reduction initiative: http://www.bcit.ca/sustainability/operations/waste/smallerbins.shtml
There is also some great composting going on:

Translink in Metro Vancouver has ride-share info on its website, including an online ride-share registry under the Jack Bell name:

A good place to start is the simple living/voluntary simplicity movement, e.g. http://www.simpleliving.net/
Good luck!

Lowering Heat or Air Conditioning at Work
2010-06-01 15:16:21 UTC
Does anyone know of any workplace campaigns to help people accept a lowering of heating in winter ("forget, the suit, wear a sweater"?) or reduction in a/c in summer ("it's nice and hot around here"?)? I would like to investigate these options, which have been encouraged and tried at the home level, and try to apply them at an institutional level. Does anyone know of anything like this that has already met success?

There is a good search engine on idling campaigns at
http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/idling/
It lets you search by all kinds of campaigns including measurement (see, e.g, http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/idling/index.cfm?fuseaction=idling.campaignDetails&id=10)
Good luck!

Re: Data on Values and Changing to Sustainable Living Habits

I found this book extremely helpful in giving an overview of how simpler and more sustainable choices can be instrumental in leading more meaningful lives: Living Simply with Children by Marie Sherlock (see http://www.simpleliving.net/main/resource.asp?sku=blswc). It cites many other resources, not sure about how much is statistical vs. just very well presented common sense.
