Re: Has Anyone Evaluated a Riverfront Trail/Walk?
2009-01-17 19:23:24 UTC
Hi Beth,
My design company created interpretive and wayfinding signs for the Salinas RiverWalk in Paso Robles, California in 2007. The project, which included native plantings and trail construction with benches etc., has not been formally evaluated as far as I know. If you'd like to see the signs go to our website and download the booklet "Sign Designs" (pdf). http://www.gaiagraphics.com

Great Turtle Race Daily Update!
2008-06-06 14:07:10 UTC
Dear Colleagues,
Like most of you, I get emails all day asking me to do something for polar bears, wolves, whales, habitat threats... Mostly I click the link and sign the letter, delete and move on. I skim emails from GreenBiz, Grist, Treehugger, Inhabitat, etc. to stay educated about issues and solutions. Occasionally I'm moved to give money, and currently have about 20 active memberships (recent donations): Union of Concerned Scientists, Environmental Defense Fund, Sea Shepherd... not to mention my local environmental groups. It's a lot of emails. Recently came across this Great Turtle Race and find it unique among advocacy efforts I've seen. It's a fun way to get and keep interest, while putting the sea turtle preservation message forward again and again. Your Turtle makes it personal. The race makes it current and exciting. The seafood pledge is a commitment to change behavior, and the rest of the site encourages education and additional action (which helps a person remain consistent with their pledge - stated values).
Join the fun!

Great Turtle Race Daily Update!
The races for the U.S. presidential nominations may be over, but out in the Pacific things are getting really exciting! Day 4 ended with Billie II heading north and Drexelina bunching up on Stinger's left flipper. Will Drexelina be able to get around her? Where is that race official!?! And what is Mama Tabitha up to? She is making a break around the left of the race, heading up to the top of the Phillippines. Beibei and Jingjing seem to be following her. Is today the day they head East? In the east, Saphira II keeps her lead and is closing in on the tropical Hawaian Islands. J K Turtling and Mastodona seem to be lost in the south. Back at the coast Shelby finally started her run last night, so maybe today she will make some progress and get back in the race. She has a bulldog as a mascot so she is a real strong swimmer. There is still a lot of ocean out there, anything can happen. Friday is fish day for many people. With the weekend coming up people are set to relax and have a nice meal. But be careful! If fish is on your menu, remember that tuna and swordfish are high in mercury. Go to the How Can I Help page and help sea turtles by signing up for the Great Turtle Race Seafood Pledge. Check out the NOAA fish watch guide and Monterrey Bay Aquarium seafood guide before you buy. Give up some of your favorite sea foods to highlight awareness of the problems of sustaining fisheries in the Pacific ocean. Keep checking http://www.greatturtlerace.com/ throughout the day. The site is updated several times a day so you will get the latest on your turtle's progress. -

Any Advice about a Campaign to Stop Feeding Birds?
2008-03-24 14:32:58 UTC
Dear Colleagues,
We're working on interpretive signage for a City with a small lake full of ducks and geese that people love to feed, though it causes serious water quality problems and poor health in the birds. Some of the signs will be regulatory, as people can be cited for feeding the birds. But we'd like to approach the issue gently, so the other signs will educate people about the habitat and the impacts of feeding. Besides harming birds and habitat, feeding has human impacts: the lake is filling in and the dirty water breeds avian disease that could transfer to people. Do you have advice about ways to stay positive with the messaging, or know of any campaigns that have been successful in curbing a traditional, much-loved activity that contributes to health and environmental problems (which are mostly invisible)? Thank you for your help!

Dr. Cialdini: Influencing Environmental Behavior
2008-02-14 19:27:31 UTC
Hi folks,
This link gets you the transcript of Dr. Robert Cialdini's recent testimony in Congress about research with social marketing applications specific to environmental issues. It's a short, fascinating read. http://www.insideinfluence.com/current/10/testify.htm
Dr. Cialdini describes how the wrong message on interpretive signs increased theft of petrified wood from the national forest in Arizona, where the right words reduced theft below 3%. How the message printed on little cards in hotel bathrooms influenced 34% more people to re- use their towels to decrease water waste. And which message among several printed on doorhangers was most influential in reducing energy usage in a large California neighborhood. These cases show the power of social norms, which drives social behavior for good or bad. If you identify a behavior as being common, people are more likely to do it because 'everyone is doing it'. If you tell people how even a small amount of undesirable behavior is harmful to the environment and can say that most people are behaving responsibly, as Cialdini says "the social science evidence is plain that the information will serve both to validate and stimulate the desired action." We engaged this idea recently in developing interpretive signs for trails along the Salinas River and San Luis Obispo Creek. The signs were part of rehabitation projects to restore the habitat for steelhead, an endangered fish that lives in the ocean but returns to its birthcreek every year to breed. What began something like "Steelhead are struggling to survive human impacts such as erosion, pollution, habitat loss..." was re-written with a positive social norm focus: "Many people have worked hard to help wildlife that rely on this creek. As a result, steelhead numbers are increasing and there is reason to hope the species will continue to recover." This is literally true of course, although the increase of breeding steelhead in some waterways can currently be counted on one hand. Just as native plants growing on the banks again is important to steelhead recovery, so is the growing numbers of people who feel motivated to care. If you've read "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" you know Cialdini is a thoroughly engaging presenter who weaves marketing and social science research data with stories that explain six primary tools of influence: reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity. The book is a mainstay of marketing eduction. There are a few case studies in the book that pertain to influencing environmental behavior, but this testimony focuses on it. http://www.insideinfluence.com/current/10/testify.htm

Master Gardener Like Sustainable Building Advisor Programs
2008-02-14 13:15:55 UTC
Hi Joe,
The EcoBroker program for Realtors is akin to what you're looking for. http://www.ecobroker.com EcoBroker designation requires fairly extensive training and a number of tests, though it does not contain the community service component. My partner is an EcoBroker (and Master Gardener), very involved with our local Green Build group. Please feel free to contact her directly for more information.

Re: Greening our libraries
2007-12-22 19:16:21 UTC
An inspirational story about an entire green library set to open next spring in the City of Highland, San Bernardino County, California: Highland's Library and Environmental Learning Center has a rooftop garden, solar tubes for natural lighting, flooring made from recycled tires, and 30 other green building elements that add up to a gold LEED rating, currently the only public building at this level in the state. The design is inspired not only all the green elements but the space itself wavy walls, walkways between aquariums, fun windows, vibrant colors... They've done a beautiful job. Literally awesome. I understand it was designed by San Bernardino County architects, who got LEED certification first. Not sure of the details, but I heard the County Supervisors decided in response to a lawsuit that all new public buildings in the county will be built green. It sets a great precedent. They gathered their money from a number of sources, including grants supporting green building and grants to enrich depressed areas. The county and state are major funders, plus contributions from local organizations. Our part is to create interpretive signage that includes markers to identify all the LEED-certified elements, which we'll make from recycled glass to match the glass blocks used throughout the building. Other signs ID plants and animals, show how compost works, explain the problem with e-waste... Some displays are geared for toddlers (match mommy with baby animals), some for older kids and teens. We're thrilled to be involved! Terre Highland Environmental Education Coalition There is a contact name on the website for the library project. http://www.h-e-e-c.org/

The Green Bible
2007-11-08 14:54:32 UTC
Hi Claire,
"The Green Bible" is a paperback that highlights biblical passages relating to stewardship, sustainability, and acknowledgment of the divinity inherent in "God's creation." Written by Stephen B. Scharper and edited by Hilary Cunningham, The Green Bible was originally published in 1993 and republished in 2002. There is another book with the same name that is a fairly generic book of poetry. Scharper's Green Bible is the one that discusses scripture. At one time our local Earth Day group talked about gifting one to every local religious leader. It's hard to find, but still available used. Here's one link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0883448548/ref=dp_olp_1/102-7671650-4060936

FaceBook Social Networking to Ridesharing
2007-09-21 14:21:50 UTC
Ridesharing With a Social Twist from springwise.com
One of the problems with traditional carpool matching sites has been the anxiety most people feel when faced with the prospect of sharing a car with someone they dont know. By tapping into the power of social networking, however, a few companies on both sides of the Atlantic are making that problem go away. In the US, Zimride and GoLoco have both gotten a fair bit of attention recently for harnessing social networking platform Facebook to arrange shared rides. By combining the ride-matching function with the reassurance of perusable user profiles, such sites eliminate much of the fear that can come up when people try to find rides anonymously. In the UK, meanwhile, isanyonegoingto.com launched in April incorporating its own social networking component. Users register their name and town or postcode, then add a photograph of themselves and/or their vehicles and a short description of themselves. They also pick one of three categories that suits their travel needs best leisure, business or studentand enter their travel requirements. Other members can then search the site and communicate through Skype or e-mail to arrange travel and divide the costs before meeting. Over ten thousand members have already registered with the free site. Founder Sonia Slater explains: Our fundamental objectives are to realize how we all can be environmentally sound and still have fun, improve the environment by reducing the number of cars on the roads, use the Internet to introduce travelers and change the way we travel. The advertising-supported site hopes to go global in 2008, and is seeking partners with a strong sense of corporate social responsibility to help. Meanwhile, it provides a nice example of how social networks can overcome the barriers that keep real-world consumers apart. One to bring to other parts of the world? (Related: Facilitating cab shares to the airport.)

Sustainability and Green Marketing Discussions on Treehugger.com
2007-08-14 14:30:42 UTC
Hi list,
Treehugger.com has active discussions on subjects that have been of interest to this list:
What Does Green Really Mean?
Words like green or sustainable - what do they really mean?
Green is so mushy. Wikipedia thinks it is the same as Sustainable, but William McDonough once said "We still have people talking about 'sustainability'! Nothing is more boring. Are you proud if your marriage is 'sustainable'? We need a better word or a better definition.
Any suggestions? More... http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/08/what_does_green.php
Green Branding and Marketing: Who's Out In Front? [This is the last in a series of five guest posts looking at the importance of brand strategy and effective marketing for green and ethical businesses. For post one, click here, for post two, click here, for post three, click here, and post four here.]
OK, to conclude our posts about good-for-the-world branding, were going to call out the brands that best exemplify the qualities we discussed. Think of it as the Oscars of green branding, only no acceptance speeches or silly statues. (To avoid anything that smells of self-promotion, were not including any brands that our company works with.
