Re: Creative Educational Display for Food Waste
2008-08-01 16:54:48 UTC
I've been planning on building a 'living landfill' display out of an old fish tank. That way students can see the layers of a landfill, and it's easy to demonstrate how food waste breaks down anaerobically, contributing to global warming. Feel free to steal the idea. If you do, I want pics!

Public Events Rule of Thumb
2008-04-11 18:45:55 UTC
Does anyone have a general rule of thumb they use to estimate how much waste (in weight or volume) is expected at an outdoor public event serving food? I am trying to assist a student-lead group with organizing their festival aimed at educating and building awareness around the need for bringing sustainable practices into daily life. You can google the We Are Many Festival for more info.
Many thanks,

Re: education in recreation centres
2008-01-08 16:08:34 UTC
Hi there,
I worked on the Desert Living Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is an interpretive center dedicated to educating Las Vegas residents about water conservation and other sustainable concepts. Check it out at http://www.springspreserve.org/html/dlc.html. Everything in the gallery is interactive, but many things are large and would be difficult to incorporate into a centre that is not dedicated to that kind of information. However, there are some interactives that may be usable, for example, an exercise bike hooked up to incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs, and LEDs, to demonstrate the amount of energy it takes to turn on efficient lights vs. non-efficient lights. There was another exhibit that showed where wastewater goes, and where your power comes from. The larger exhibits included a sustainably designed house whose layers were peeled away to show sustainable options for everything from furniture and finishes to energy efficient appliances. You may want to get in contact with someone at the center itself to discuss how those exhibits are working, since the center opened about six months ago.
Good luck with your quest!

Re: Incentives vs. potential incentives
2008-01-07 09:17:16 UTC
Derrick,
be careful when considering incentives, especially if they're extrinsically motivated. If the reward scheme can not be continued or sustained over time, participation rates will decline rapidly once it is gone. For more on this, I recommend you read Deci & Ryan's work on Self Determination Theory - they make clear distinctions between intrinsic and extrinsic reward schemes...let me know if you want more clarification or article sources.
