2006-09-13 11:20:16 UTC
Hi Doug:
Our organization has had a household hazardous waste facility for 11 years. It has been very successful. It is open to all residents within Summit County in Ohio. We are open only two days per week, limited hours, from April through September. Please go to our website www.saswma.org for more info. Our recycling coordinator will be happy to talk with you. Should she e- mail you directly at personal e-mail. We recycle used motor oil, paints, solvents, pesticides, etc., plus old tires, TV's, and computers. Just let me know.

Re: Proper disposal of pet waste

Doug:
Check out two websites: City of Seatte Public Utilities www.ci.seattle.wa.us/util Search Pet Waste King County Solid Waste Division www.metrokc.gov/dnrp/swd Click on What do I do with? Then click on Animal Waste I used to live in the Seattle area and used to double bag (plastic) the dog waste and place it in the trash. There are also other options given. If it is large quantities of animal waste, they address that. As you know Seattle and King County are noted for their recycling efforts. They make it clear not to use dog or cat waste for composting.

You might want to check out Rainforest Action Network's website - www.ran.org. They are doing a SmartPaper campaign where universities are getting involved. Awhile back a did get a list from RAN of Suppliers of Tree-free, recycled, and certified paper which I revised. Feel free to contact me if you would like the list. Check out also www.rethinkpaper.org which I believe is out of San Francisco. And also New Leaf Paper, www.newleafpaper.com located in San Francisco and New York. Phone in SF is 888-989-LEAF. This company is on the list that I mentioned.

Check out www.rethinkpaper.org There are alternatives to paper from trees called tree-free paper. Seems like a good website. I also have websites on where to order tree-free, recycled, and certified paper.

Social Marketing and Recycling
2005-12-21 15:33:35 UTC
Many people have been e-mailing about social marketing. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, put together a booklet entitled "Social Marketing for Recycling in Ohio, A Guide to Understanding, Planning and Conducting Social Marketing Projects." It gets into aligning tools with behavioral assumptions, e.g. prompts, incentives, feedback. It also discusses types of research. It talks about the 3R's of social marketing - results, research, and response. If anyone wants more info, you can contact Larry Cooper at ODNR at 614-265-6401, or fax 614-262-9387 or e-mail him at [email protected]

United Nations Decade on Education for Sustainable Development
2005-11-04 11:41:38 UTC
The UN has declared 2005-2014 the Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. Global Vision is developing a global curriculum for the UN which will be completed in 2007. The curriculum targets youth and focuses on world problems and solutions in areas of environment, health, economics, education, and social. This curriculum will go out to many countries. Go to www.global-vision.org for more information. Also check out www.popsustainability.org. This is a group of young professionals who are promoting sustainability awareness amongst young adults ages 18-35 through pop culture and multiple media outlets. This group also has a campaign to study the health and environmental effects of plastic. They are looking at alternative materials (biodegradable) like corn in the making of plastic and the group has a campaign for a Biodegradable Plastics Bill in New York. Here at the Summit/Akron Solid Waste Authority in Akron, Ohio, we have connected a billboard design contest with the theme "Reduce the Use of Our Natural Resources Today for the Sake of the Next Seven Generations." We target high school art students who see a PowerPoint presentation on Sustainability. Concepts like cradle to cradle, life cycle of a product, closing the loop, environmental footprint, and green design are discussed. Discussion of what's being done today, e.g ecovillages, green buildings, agroforestry, are part of the presentation.
