Re: The Guerilla Gardeners
2009-01-20 17:08:18 UTC
This has sprung up in Melbourne Australia, at least three sites in the inner urban suburbs, one that has even got a little fence around it to protect it from the mowers, and signs that encourage all to share in the care and bounty of the garden.
There are a number of Guerrilla Gardening websites and even a wikipedia entry with 10 media references and a heap of regional and external links. A local search finds vogue magazine with a discussion about groups in Sydney Australia! So YES it's spreading like weeds!

Fostering Allies
2006-03-19 21:59:14 UTC
Hello Community Based Social Marketing Folks!
I'm looking for strategies and advice in the area of getting bureaucrats onside. We are developing a proposal to a large municipality that is outsourcing their sustainable transport program due to budget constraints (and facing congestion problems). Recognition for the value of the program is not present in the decision maker who is facing significant pressure to adhere to an employment freeze. The primariy proponent of the proposal has been working on the program for some time making efforts to demonstrate the benefits of a sustainable behaviour change program and the importance of relationship development over the long term. I suspect that the bureaucrat hears budget blowout when long term relationships are emphasised as the key to the success of these programs. So I'm asking if list members have had experience with successfully engaging decision makers in sustainable behaviour change as the best route?
Thanks folks!

Re: Lists of green behaviors for the public

I recommend this resource: The Consumers Guide to Effective Evironmental Choices Practical Advice from the Union of Concerned Scientists (Drs Micheal Brower & Warren Leon) Amazon site to see the book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/060980281X/qid=1141883306/sr=1-1/ref=
sr_1_1/104-1918261-3556714?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 It provides a contextual basis for what's important in our behavioural choices. It also comes from a reputable source. It identifies what's really important and points out the absurdity of an SUV driver being concerned about forgetting their cloth bags when they get to the supermarket when the impact of their car trip is much greater. It provides an extensive analysis of everyday household decisions (travel, diet, purchasing) and is backed by the research and credibilty of UCS. (It's not currently available in Australia but i just happen to have access to a good quantity of them, let me know if you're an aussie who wants a copy.)

Re: Seeking suggestions on event planning services

I can vouch for GEMS registrations service, they are phenomenal! I worked with them on UN's The International Children's Conference on the Environment Canada 2002 and The Leading Edge- National Stewardship and Conservation Conference 2003. The quality of the service is excellent and they can tailor what they offer to you according to budget and other specs. They can come onsite and do your registration for you if you can afford to get them to where your event is (they are located in Nanaimo BC Canada) or they can provide the web based form for registrants and leave the onsite to you, while providing you with the database. They were also very ammenable to our Green Conference Guidelines. This is their website: http://www.gemsregistration.com They may be able to suggest others to cover the other areas. Probably best to get locals to do some of it IE food etc. Also, on the list use protocols, as evidenced by Dougs response to Bob, it's very easy for us to forget how replying to messages gets sent to the whole list including the original messages. Happens to the best of us Doug! ;)
