Re: Garbage Collection
2008-01-10 14:40:35 UTC
Prince Edward Island has regulated a mandatory source-separated system with bi-weekly collection for the entire province, and quite effectively. This service is offered in both urban centers and rural communities. We have surveys from our customers and have received high ratings indicating bi-weekly is sufficient.

Re: Increasing Waste Diversion Through the Use of Clear Garbage Bags, Webinar on Friday January 18

Prince Edward Island, Canada banned all solid-coloured bags as of 2002. A mandatory source-separation program was introduced and all rural dump locations closed. We now have one landfill location, and are proud of our diversion rates of 64-65% annually since 2002. We are a small province and have proven that when businesses, homeowners, and tourists work together to do their part for the environment, wonderful results can be achieved. Wastes placed for collection in anything but clear transparent bags are simply NOT COLLECTED. Organics are collected in paper bags only, and recyclables in blue transparent bags. Information on our programs for anyone intersted can be found at www.iwmc.pe.ca.

RE: pharmaceutical take-back programs
2007-04-05 14:31:18 UTC
Prince Edward Island, Canada has such a program. Islanders may take back unused or expired medication to any pharmacy at no charge. In return, the pharmacy is not charged for the final disposal of medication received from households. It is called "Take it Back"; the link and contact information is attached. http://iwmc.pe.ca/takeback.htm

Re: Effectiveness of radio vs newspaper advertising
2006-02-02 10:31:38 UTC
At IWMC, we utilize random community audits/surveys to help measure our success with respect to disseminating information on our waste management/waste reduction programs. Our feedback here on the Island clearly indicates that about 76% of our readers obtain their information from the newspaper, and about 31% actually hear our PSA's on radio. About 80% indicate they learn about our programs through newsletters delivered twice annually by Canada Post. I realize the stats could be different for other jurisdictions, but thought I would share our results.
Hope this helps.
