Two Interesting Web Sources
2006-08-23 12:02:26 UTC
Greetings, all.
Don't know if everyone's already familiar with this excellent review of Americans' environmental literacy: http://www.neetf.org/pubs/ELR2005.pdf written in 2005. If not, I'd recommend it checking it out, even though it's a long read (there's a summary at the front). Also, if you're not already aware of this daily source of eco-tips -- www.idealbite.com, I've found that it's pretty well written and has well researched information.
Cheers,

Re: transportation and environment - materials/curriculum for 2-4 year olds?
2006-07-07 08:17:54 UTC
Despite my ardent environmentalism, I have to take issue with the query about environmental curricula for 2-4 year-olds. Kids at that age are hardly an audience for this kind of discussion. I recommend reading David Sobel's book "Beyond Ecophobia," wherein the author suggests we honor children's developmental stages. We greatly risk disassociating preschoolers from nature with a "doom and gloom" approach. The focus during early childhood should be on getting kids to connect with and love nature before asking them to save it.

Example of successful consumer program
2006-05-22 11:59:33 UTC
Regarding the query about a successful consumer "engagement" program that has led to a change in purchasing behaviors, I'd suggest the sustainable seafood program inaugurated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium http://mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp It aims to shift the seafood buying habits of grocery shoppers and restaurant diners. This Seafood Watch wallet card campaign has been adopted by than 50 zoos and aquaria in North America, as well as many other partners. It has also spawned (pardon the expression) similar programs by other conservation groups. The aquarium staff has studied the success of the program, and I suggest you contact them for more info. http://mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp
