Re: Sustainable Transport Promotion

Sianne,
I have written a short training document on the subject, called "Public Awareness and Behavior change for sustainable urban transport" . You can download it for free from www.sutp.org (free registration required).
There is also a recent paper on the topic from TCRP, called Understanding How Individuals Make Travel and Location Decisions: Implications for Public Transportation. I misplaced the link but I'm sure you'll find it under www.trb.gov ..
If you need any further help, I can give a hand. I also have some other material, not directly related but relevant to a certain extent... It would also be great to hear from your results!
Best regards,

Hi,
You should download our 180 page document on carfree development which has all details on this (look for it in www.sutp.org - module 3e, after free registration). Also, it has a review of all studies regarding impact on retail revenue and even land value- see table 10 of that document!! Let me know if you need more info.

Re: Enabling folks to drive less

Angela,
There are various resources, especially if you google lots less cars, less car diet or travelsmart. The Less Car Diet is the rage right now, and you can find lots of it in www.ecoplan.org or www.lotslesscars.org . we also have a publication called public awareness and behavior change in sustainable transport, which is accessible for registered users at www.sutp.org (registration is free and emails are sent only once every two months). You can also check out www.vtpi.org for other resources on this, especially one of their chapters on marketing public transport, etc. You can also contact me directly if you need any help.

Re: Can several behavioral changes be addressed in 1 FSB campaign?

This is very similar to the "stages of change" model developed in the health sector. I've adapted it to behavior change in sustainable transport in my recent publication with GTZ (training document Public awareness and behavior change in sustainable transport), available from www.sutp.org . Great that we keep discussing this, and I would really appreciate some feedback on this publication as well.
Thanks!

I'd like to add something to Liam's post: you should always be aware of the fact that changing the attitude might not necessarily change the behaviour (though there is a "motor" component in attitudes). I always think of generating awareness- changing attitudes- changing behaviours as distinct steps. Hope it helps.
Thanks for the references!!

Can Several Behavioral Changes be Addressed in 1 FSB Campaign?

Nancy,
Normally you'll see that the change of a behavior to a sustainable one may be transferred to other behaviors as well in the future. Of course, you need to transmit underlying principles of sustainability when you change a behavior instead of just going ahead with classic reinforcement.

Re: Peak Oil to Hydrogen Economy

That is a good point. In a related topic, biofuels are also as inefficient, since they need more fuel to be generated than that they will eventually produce (picking up the product with a truck, taking it to the plant, processing it, etc). The eventual turnout will come from subsidies which are given to biofuel producers. Of course, it's a big business, but sustainable? I doubt it.

Re: bear-human interaction in an urban setting
2006-08-18 19:38:03 UTC
J,
I would use pictures during a focus group. Ask them what they see and try to make participants say adjectives that describe the image of the bear. Divide them by age groups and gender, maybe by areas where they live. Also, I would do a semantic differential with an image of a bear (but after the focus group and/or interviews), using adjective pairs of big- small, safe-dangerous, fuzzy- rough, etc.

Joanne,
If it is of any use, go to http://www.bogotacomovamos.org/bogotacv/scripts/index.php where you'll find some interesting stats on public perception from Bogota. It's in Spanish, however.

Re: Bicycle lanes - and enviro/social benefits

Hi,
Wright and Fulton wrote a great article on an issue from Transport Reviews in 2005. Please give it a look. Please also see our sourcebook material and training courses on www.sutp.org . If you have further questions, please write to me at [email protected] . Regarding best practices, Bogot is a good (though not perfect) example. Quito may be another one, and there are some blossoming at some places. Our project works permanently on these issues, especially policy advise in cities from developing countries.
